Reflecting on Hispanic Heritage Month 2017

The Hispanic Employee Resource Group (HERG) celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month this past October with a robust and engaging line up of events for employees. These activities included an interesting conversation around a video screening of What Does 'Hispanic' Look Like?, engaging discussions with guest speakers Nina Vaca and Leo Pareja, and the launch of our new Spanish Lunch and Learns! As the new HERG President, I have witnessed firsthand the energy our ERG brings to Fannie Mae, and it's exciting to be a part of it.
Our goal is to expose Fannie Mae to positive and impressive role models in the Hispanic community. During this enriching month, we had an opportunity to gain insights and advice from leaders like Leo Pareja, a top Hispanic real estate professional and President of NAHREP and CEO of Remine; and Nina Vaca, CEO of Pinnacle, who as a female technologist and a leading advocate for STEM education, encouraged us to be "crazy good" at whatever we do. Perhaps even more inspiring were the stories shared among Fannie Mae employees about how their families overcame challenges related to coming to the United States, such as seeking jobs, adapting to a different culture, and navigating stereotypes. And finally, HERG helped Fannie Mae come together to help those ravaged by the recent hurricanes through our SERVE initiative and other avenues, demonstrating the strength of the Latino spirit and promoting a sense of community.
HERG provides a platform to effect change. We look to the three pillars of our Diversity and Inclusion Strategy – Workforce, Workplace, and Marketplace – to help guide our programs and initiatives. The HERG is committed to:
- Increasing cultural awareness at Fannie Mae
- Offering mentorship opportunities for HERG members through our partnership with the Hispanic IT Executive Council (HITEC)
- Engage with Recruiting and external partners, such as Association of Latino Professionals in Finance & Accounting (ALPFA) and HITEC
Our partners are important to our success! HERG recognizes the importance of building solid partnerships to help advance and increase development opportunities in the technology field. Fannie Mae has been part of the HITEC family for nearly two years and was recently honored with the opportunity to host the HITEC D.C. Leadership Summit, which focused on Bridging the Digital Divide & Enabling Digital Transformation. More than 300 executives from leading Global 1000 corporations and Hispanic-owned IT firms gathered to share their personal experiences innovating, streamlining solutions, collaborating, and finding new ways to use technology to improve our day-to-day lives. Seeing our partnership in action at this event was a sign that we are moving in the right direction!
I am excited to continue our work in the New Year to broaden educational and developmental opportunities for our members and all of Fannie Mae in an inclusive, collaborative environment.
