Fannie Mae works on behalf of homebuyers and renters to ensure access to affordable and sustainable housing. It’s not only what we do, but also why we exist. We help make a home a reality for millions of homebuyers and renters.
In 2020, Fannie Mae provided $1.4 trillion in liquidity to fund the housing market -- helping individuals and families to buy, refinance, and rent approximately 6 million homes.
Fannie Mae has developed affordable housing solutions, such as our HomeReady® mortgage. This affordable mortgage loan program expands eligibility and removes barriers to homeownership for qualified homebuyers. HomeReady lets homebuyers:
- Finance up to 97 percent of the purchase price.
- Use non-traditional income sources to help qualify for a mortgage loan.
- Access homeownership education to prepare for homebuying and homeownership.
We offer tools and resources to help throughout the homebuying process, so homebuyers can be more knowledgeable and make informed housing decisions. We help prepare consumers to buy and own a home through our innovative and award-winning consumer website. We also offer an online homeownership course from our partner, Framework, and work with housing agencies and organizations to offer prepurchase counseling and information on down payment assistance.
Our commitment extends to homeowners. Our goal is to stabilize communities and ensure sustainable homeownership, whenever possible. It is why we offer post-purchase programs, like home modification and foreclosure prevention, to homeowners with loans owned by Fannie Mae.
Homeowners also have access to our Fannie Mae Mortgage Help Network. It offers free, personalized mortgage assistance through a housing counseling agency approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Homeowners can work with a counselor to review their situation and determine available options. The housing counselors work with the homeowner and their mortgage company throughout the process.
We've put these housing programs in place to help homeowners and communities, and they are succeeding. In 2020, we helped distressed families retain their homes or avoid foreclosure through approximately 299,000 workout solutions. If you or someone you know needs mortgage assistance, go to KnowYourOptions.com.
Home doesn't always mean homeownership. We work with our industry partners to help provide communities, individuals, and families with access to quality rental housing at an affordable price. We are a leading provider of financing for multifamily properties. Every year we finance hundreds of thousands of rental housing units.
Fannie Mae's KnowYourOptions.com also helps educate renters who either may be entering the rental market or trying to determine whether renting is the right option. We also provide assistance to renters living in a Fannie Mae foreclosed property. Our Tenant-in-Place Rental Program offers leasing options to qualified renters occupying a foreclosed Fannie Mae property. Additionally, non-profit partners, legal protection services, and other housing programs are available to help tenants. Contact the Fannie Mae Resource Center for more details.
