My Virtual Summer Internship Experience Heart of Housing

I am a rising senior at James Madison University majoring in Management with a concentration in Human Resources and a minor in Communication Studies and have recently joined Fannie Mae as a summer intern supporting the Talent Acquisition team. I was intrigued by Fannie Mae's summer internship program because of the opportunity to contribute my skills to a diverse team of professionals. I knew I could offer a unique perspective and wanted the opportunity to expand my skills and learn about the Human Resources field.
In early April, Fannie Mae announced the 10-week Summer Internship Program had now been consolidated into a 6-week Virtual Summer Internship Program in response to COVID-19. Given the circumstances, I was pleased to still be able to participate and gain valuable work experience. I know of some other internship programs that have been cancelled, and am grateful that Fannie Mae made the decision to continue their program.
There are always a ton of questions that come with starting a new job and getting set up, especially considering the current situation. Luckily, Fannie Mae provided excellent communication throughout my remote onboarding process. My manager and start partner reached out to me prior to my first day to welcome me to Fannie Mae. In addition, the Campus Recruiters consistently held virtual office hours for interns to ask questions about the program and get to know Fannie Mae's recruiting team. The team also hosted a "First Day Prep" call on WebEx to share best practices for setting up my virtual workspace, first day "must haves," and technology expectations.
Although I was not able to physically walk through the doors of Fannie Mae’s office in Washington, D.C., I still felt such a welcoming atmosphere virtually. During my new employee orientation, I was provided with clear and concise information to best adapt to my intern position. I also participated in a virtual scavenger hunt, where I was placed on a team with other interns and we answered a series of questions about Fannie Mae. This allowed me to learn more about the organization and connect with other interns across many different divisions.
Fannie Mae's virtual onboarding process was a great experience for me. Due to these unprecedented times we are all facing, I truly appreciate Fannie Mae’s support and preparation to ensure a successful virtual internship experience. From the start, I felt ready to learn and take on all opportunities that have come my way. Even after this summer comes to an end, I am excited to continue learning, growing, and developing skills that will prepare me for my future career.
