WASHINGTON, DC – Fannie Mae (FNMA/OTC) received the 2017 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). An ENERGY STAR partner since 2011, Fannie Mae received the award for its continued commitment and outstanding effort to increase adoption of energy-efficient policies and practices in multifamily housing.

The 2017 ENERGY STAR Award winners were chosen from a vast network of 16,000 ENERGY STAR partners. Each winner leads their industry in the development and adoption of strategies and products that provide substantial energy and money savings in commercial and residential properties.

“Receiving this award for the third year in a row is a testament to our continued innovation and leadership in ensuring greener, better quality and more affordable housing for everyone,” said Jeffery Hayward, executive vice president of multifamily, Fannie Mae. “We are very proud of the role that we played in creating the Green Multifamily market and it all started with our partnership with the EPA. Creating the ENERGY STAR 1-100 Score to help multifamily owners track and reduce energy consumption of their properties continues to be a game changer for a metrics-driven industry.”

Fannie Mae Multifamily has provided over $4 billion in Green Financing through 2016. These loans support properties that will save 20 percent or more on their annual energy or water consumption by upgrading to energy- or water-efficient equipment, as well as for properties that have been awarded a green building certification, such as ENERGY STAR or National Green Building Standard.

“Fannie Mae’s Green Financing Solutions make positive, measurable changes at multifamily properties, said Bob Simpson, vice president for Multifamily Affordable, Green, And Small Loan Financing, Fannie Mae. “We are proud of the outstanding year we had in 2016 and look forward to continuing to deliver innovative energy-efficient solutions for our lenders and borrowers.”

Since its inception in 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped prevent a total of more than 2.4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2015 alone, ENERGY STAR and its partners saved American businesses and consumers 503 billion kilowatt hours and $34 billion dollars on their energy bills, while achieving broad emission reductions.
