Homebuyer Education Consumer Faqs Hero Image

Fannie Mae HomeView®FAQs

At Fannie Mae, we are committed to providing access to homeownership in a way that drives long-term success. We believe that education is essential to empowering the next generation of homeowners. That is why we strive to offer the tools and information necessary to pave the way towards the possibility of owning a home. An informed buyer is a prepared buyer, and we are here to help you achieve it.

Our homeownership education course, completion certificate, and all associated resources are available free of charge.

The name you enroll with will be used on your certificate of completion. You will want your certificate name to match the exact name you provide on your loan application.

HomeView is not “Hud-approved” because HUD does not approve homeownership courses, but rather approves housing counseling agencies and certifies housing counselors. HomeView aligns with National Industry Standards for pre-purchase homeownership education. HomeView provides referrals to HUD-certified housing counselors located in your area.

The HomeView course, checklist, glossary of terms and course evaluation are available in both Spanish and English.

You can explore the course in any order you prefer, and even start with the module that best fits your current stage in the homebuying process. However, please note that all six modules must be completed before you can access the final assessment.

To earn your certificate of completion, you must first complete all six modules. Only then will you be able to access the final assessment.

After completing the HomeView course and scoring 80% or higher on the final assessment, you will receive a certificate of completion indicating you have satisfied the homeownership course requirement. Your lender should instruct you on how to submit a copy of the certificate for their records.

Each certificate includes a date of completion, but there is no expiration date. Lenders may have specific policies regarding how long certificates are valid after the date of completion. Check with your lender or program administrator to confirm your lender’s policy.

You have an unlimited number of times to attempt the final knowledge assessment. A score of 80% or higher must be achieved to earn a certificate of completion.

You can download your certificate at any time by logging into the HomeView portal. Once you’ve completed all course modules and passed the final assessment, the “Download Certificate” button will become available.

To access your certificate:

  • Log in to the HomeView portal.
  • Go to My HomeView Learning History.
  • Click on the Fannie Mae's HomeView® Course tile.
  • On the right-hand side, locate the Completion Status section.
  • Click the blue “Download Certificate” button.

If you don’t see the certificate available, review your progress in the HomeView course to ensure all modules are completed. Retake any incomplete modules if necessary.

Housing counseling is an acceptable option to fulfill the homeownership education requirement. It may be helpful to homebuyers who are looking for tailored one-on-one or group counseling or may need additional assistance to understand the homebuying or lending process.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) provides an online tool where you can search for housing counselors in your area. These counselors are approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
