Update on the Originator Subcommittee

Multifamily Facts

Phyllis KleinStrengthening customer relationships and finding new ways to engage with you is important to us. That's why we created the DUS® Originator Subcommittee -- because a stronger connection with our external salesforce -- our DUS Originators -- provides a feedback loop on critical areas, including product enhancements, execution and delivery, and communications. Receiving feedback directly from the team that talks to a wide variety of borrowers helps us serve everyone more efficiently and effectively.

How is the Originator Subcommittee structured?
DUS CEOs nominated originators to serve on the Subcommittee for a one-year term. The group holds conference calls and meets in person several times a year. Frank Lutz from Berkadia and Don King from Walker & Dunlop do a great job co-chairing the Subcommittee.

What are the discussion topics for 2016?
The Subcommittee discusses ways to improve our interaction with the DUS network and suggested two new communication vehicles:

  1. DUS Production Call -- once a month, Fannie Mae provides insight into what we are seeing in production and quoting, how the capital markets are performing, and how we are managing our cap. In addition, we deep-dive on various products such as Green Financing and Structured Finance.
  2. Multifamily Minute -- bi-weekly email to the DUS network with real-time information on production, pricing, and credit.

Both the DUS Production Call and the Multifamily Minute have been well received by the DUS community.

A great deal of the focus with the Subcommittee is placed on managing our pipeline and prioritizing the business that we want to win. Certainly, you can imagine the liveliness of these conversations! These are important discussions that will guide our business through the year.

Additionally, the Originator Subcommittee will partner with the Chief Underwriters Working Group to review suggested modifications and enhancements for Student, Military, Manufactured, Seniors Housing, and Small Loans. The Fannie Mae product development team is partnering with members of both groups to create the right enhancements to the Mod Rehab product to make it a competitive solution for borrowers. Improving Supplemental and Green Financing is also on the agenda.

I can't wait to see what else this group can accomplish -- it's the right group of people, asking the right questions, at the right time. If you'd like to know more about the Subcommittee and their work, or anything else about our business, please reach out to me any time.
