Proposal Overview

Hospitals are neighborhood anchors in thousands of communities and are motivated by legal, moral and financial incentives to address the social determinants of well-being such as employment and housing. Increasingly, rising rental costs near anchor institutions push low income workers out of transitional neighborhoods reducing the quality of healthcare and producing gentrification and segregation. This proposal will test the expansion of an affordable housing development and onsite healthcare workforce training that goes beyond entry level jobs across the South Side of Columbus and provide training in those locations.

  • In 2009, the South Side had the highest rate of vacancy (29.6%) in the Central Ohio metro area and high rates of Black infant mortality and violence while NCH had hundreds of unfilled entry and skilled jobs.
  • Their proposal plans to build an additional 170 rental units to ensure an affordable, mixed-income neighborhood, while increasing social health and wellness programs across the community.
  • If successful, they will expand this model to other communities.
