Statement by Jeffery Hayward Senior Vice President, Community Lending & Development on Loan Modification Scam Alert Campaign

WASHINGTON, DC -- Fannie Mae is committed to helping struggling homeowners avoid scams and educating the public about the scam artists who prey on this vulnerable population. Today, NeighborWorks America announced a national public education and enforcement campaign to educate borrowers about loan modification scams and to encourage victims to report fraud.

Fannie Mae is pleased to partner with NeighborWorks America as well as local, state and federal agencies, nonprofits and financial institutions in this important effort to educate homeowners, protect them from the scammers who would take advantage of them and assist in enforcement efforts. We look forward to our work with this coalition, which will provide coordinated outreach to homeowners, educate them about the free help that is available, warn them about what to be aware of and give them the tools they need to detect and report mortgage fraud. Fannie Mae remains committed to combating mortgage fraud across the industry and promoting sustainable homeownership in our communities.

Fannie Mae exists to expand affordable housing and bring global capital to local communities in order to serve the U.S. housing market. Fannie Mae has a federal charter and operates in America's secondary mortgage market to enhance the liquidity of the mortgage market by providing funds to mortgage bankers and other lenders so that they may lend to home buyers. Our job is to help those who house America.
