Responsible Lending
Fannie Mae is committed to promoting responsible lending. Along with our partners, we are working in local communities throughout the nation to help develop solutions to predatory lending.
Predatory lending involves abusive lending practices that can result, for example, in loans carrying inordinately high interest rates, excessive points or fees, single-premium credit life insurance, or prepayment penalties on loans that provide no economic benefit to the borrower.
Mortgage Fraud Prevention
Fannie Mae is also committed to preventing mortgage fraud whether perpetrated by a borrower, lender or any other person or institution. Some examples of mortgage fraud are inflated appraisals, false documentation such as employment stubs or Social Security numbers, or the misappropriation of mortgage funds.
If you have information concerning possible mortgage fraud, please call Fannie Mae at 1-800-732-6643 or e-mail us at fraud_tips@fanniemae.com. Because e-mail is not a secure communication method, please do not send Social Security numbers or financial account information.
In addition, other groups offer information that can help you identify and avoid predatory lending and mortgage fraud:
